Price Chopper in Worcester to close, second major grocery chain to close in city in three months

Photo | Grant Welker This Price Chopper on Park Avenue in Worcester will be one of three left in the city, following the closure of the firm's Cambridge Street location.

Worcester will soon lose another major grocery store, as Price Chopper Supermarkets will close its Cambridge Street location.

The Price Chopper at 50 Cambridge St. will shutter for good on Jan. 31, according to a press release issued by the grocery chain on Tuesday.

“After a thorough and thoughtful review, we determined that closing this location was necessary to align our resources with the needs of the broader market,” Blaine Bringhurst, president of Market 32/Price Chopper, said in the press release.

Bringhurst said ensuring the company’s long-term health was the reason for the closure.

The New York-based grocer will continue to operate Price Choppers locations in Worcester on Park Avenue, Southwest Cutoff, and Sunderland Road, as well as a Market 32 location on Pullman Street. The Cambridge Street store’s 22 full-time and 54 part-time employees will be offered comparable positions at other Price Chopper locations in Worcester and Shrewsbury.

The store’s pharmacy will close on Jan. 30, with the company working with an unnamed local pharmacy to transfer prescriptions records for customers.

Price Chopper’s closure of its Cambridge Street location follows the closure of Stop & Shop locations on Lincoln Street in Worcester and on Route 9 in Shrewsbury in October. Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch-Belgian multinational holding company behind Stop & Shop, cited the store’s underperformance as the reason behind the closing.

Price Chopper is owned by New York-based Northeast Grocery, which operates Market 32 and Tops Friendly Markets, a grocery chain with locations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.  Northeast was created by a merger of Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Market in 2021.

Price Chopper’s location at 50 Cambridge St. is a standalone 67,814-square-foot building sitting on 10.5 acres of land. The property is owned by Red Apple Group, a New York-based real estate firm, which purchased the property for $18.1 million in February 2015, according to City of Worcester property records.

Red Apple Group is owned by Greek billionaire John Catsimatidis, according to the company’s website. Catsimatidis ran for mayor of New York City in 2013, losing in the Republican primary.

The property at 50 Cambridge St. was given a tax assessment value of $11.29 million in 2025, according to municipal property records.
