Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. is closing two of its locations in Central Massachusetts, part of wider closures happening across the Northeast the company says is due to underperformance.

The regional chain of supermarkets, founded in 1914 in Somerville, will close locations at 545 Lincoln St. in Worcester and 539-571 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury, according to a press release issued Friday. Closing locations will cease operations on or before Nov. 2.

Following the closures, the company will have more than 350 remaining locations across the Northeast.

Stop & Shop will have 13 locations in Central Massachusetts following the closure, with locations in Acton, Bellingham, two stores in Framingham, Franklin, Grafton, Hudson, Milford, Natick, Sturbridge, Westborough, and two remaining Worcester locations at 40 West Boylston St. and 949 Grafton St.

“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers, and communities,” Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, said in the press release. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

Stop & Shop is a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize, a Dutch-Belgian multinational holding company focused on retail and wholesale operations. Netherlands-based Ahold purchased Stop & Shop for $2.9 billion in 1996, according to Supermarket News, prior to the firm’s merger with Belgium-based Delhaize Group.
