Unionized workers at Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts have voted to ratify a new contract to allow for a $2.50 per hour wage increase, added anti-discrimination protections, and increased parental leave.
The contract applies to the bargaining unit of approximately 150, including healthcare assistants, registered nurses, patient navigators, educators, telehealth workers, advanced practice clinicians, and advocates, according to a Friday press release from the union.
The workers became part of Quincy-based labor union 1199SEIU in July 2022, voting to unite at 98%. One of the motivating factors in the unionization push was the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of the Roe v. Wade abortion precedent, which the Massachusetts workers felt would increase their workload as patients from states where abortion access is limited.
The new contract applies until December 2025 and applies to workers in Worcester, Marlborough, Springfield, and Boston. Planned Parenthood has more than 200 staff members in Massachusetts.
“This contract is designed to support staff well-being and longevity at our organization through measures like increased parental leave, strong protections and benefits especially for working parents, and our continued commitment to implementing policies and trainings that support the health and safety of our staff and our patients,” Ellen Frank, interim resident and CEO of PPLM, said in the press release. “Throughout this process it was clear that both management and staff shared a lot of the same goals, which is why it’s exciting to have finalized a contract just 10 months after starting this process. We are grateful to our staff on both sides of the bargaining table who got us to this pivotal moment for PPLM.”
The contract additionally includes continued paid health and safety trainings, as well as requiring a healthy and secure working environment.
Service Employees International Union, an international labor union, represents more than 1,000 Planned Parenthood workers nationwide.
