Planned Parenthood of League of Massachusetts, which operates locations across the state including in Worcester and Marlborough, has hired a new leader.
New president and CEO Dominique Lee started her career at PPLM as a healthcare assistant and patient services manager more than 15 years ago. Lee, who is of Chinese and indigenous descent, is the first person of color to lead the organization, according to a Monday press release from PPLM.
Lee’s hiring comes as unionized Planned Parenthood workers finalized their first contract with the nonprofit. The unionization came after the U.S. Supreme Court removed the Roe v. Wade precedent allowing for legal abortions throughout the United States, and the Massachusetts workers were concerned demand for their services would rise as states other than Massachusetts banned abortion.
“Returning to Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts to lead the organization that cultivated my career-long dedication to advancing health equity and reproductive freedom is humbling and exciting. PPLM is already celebrated for its exceptional health care and education, groundbreaking research, and steadfast advocacy. This post-Roe moment demands that protective states do everything they can to equitably expand access to abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care, and PPLM is answering that call by enhancing our health care delivery, expanding sex education, researching the impacts of abortion restrictions, training reproductive health care professionals, and nurturing staff at every level of our organization to sustain our movement,” Lee said in the press release.
Lee was previously executive director of the North America Health division of IDEO, a global innovation and design firm.
Lee’s most recent role at Planned Parenthood was as chief operating officer at Planned Parenthood Mar Monte in California. In that role, she oversaw operations across 35 health centers, which provided services to more than 200,000 individuals annually, according to the press release.
Ellen Frank, who previously was interim CEO of the organization from January to September, is still at Planned Parenthood as chief development officer. Frank took over as interim following the resignation of Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, who left at the end of 2022 after growing the organization from a $20 million in revenue to 2015 to $32 million in 2022, according to an August 2022 press release from Planned Parenthood.
Lee officially started the role on Sept. 18.
