Sarah Smongeski, executive director at Pakachoag Music School in Worcester since 1992, will retire on June 1. The board of directors created an executive search and transition committee in January, and expects to name a new director later this year.
During her tenure as leader, Smongeski grew the school’s budget and expanded the faculty from 12 to 32, according to an April 15 press release. She managed a $200,000 campaign to expand with new classrooms and studios during the schools move from Auburn to Downtown Worcester, and built out the Music Matters Program, a $60,000 program which provides financial aid for music schools.
The school was created in 1992 in response to cutbacks in funding for public school music programs, and its programming includes music lessons and musical theater programming for early childhood- to adult-aged learners. The non-profit’s revenue was $488,472 in 2020, the most recently available data according to GuideStar.
There are no plans to change the organizational structure of the school with the appointment of a new executive director, Kallin Johnson, board president at Pakachoag told the WBJ.
“Given the current landscape, we are looking for someone with fundraising skills, hopefully sensitivity to the music profession, and especially someone that can represent the school in the community,” said Johnson.
