The owners of an apartment building in Upton, one of whom is the owner of a Worcester apartment complex that saw a roof collapse in 2022, have sold the Upton property for $6 million just over 14 months after they purchased it for $1.7 million.
The Upton Inn Apartments were sold in a deal finalized on Thursday by 135 Main St LLC, an entity operated by Raymond Safi and Bechara Fren.
Fren is one of the owner of the Mill Street apartment complex in Worcester, which was the site of a roof collapse in July 2022. Safi is the president of Franklin-based SMG, Inc. and was not involved in the ownership of the Worcester property.
The collapse of the Mill Street building displaced a number of residents, who were then sued by Fren in an attempt to force the tenants to remove their belongings from the damaged building. Tenants then sued Fren over the fallout from the roof collapse, according to MassLive.
Safi and Fren originally purchased the Upton Inn Apartments in May 2023 for $1.7 million.
The Upton building located at 135 Main St. contains 34 apartments and was built in 1911 as a travel lodge. It was sold to 135 Main Upton LLC, a Concord-based entity operated by Vincent MacNutt of Concord and Steffen Panzone of Westborough.
The former inn building sits on about two acres of land, with the parcel receiving a tax assessment value of $2.26 million in 2024, according to Town of Upton property records.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly said Raymond Safi was one of the owners of the Mill Street apartment complex in Worcester and had sued the tenants of the building after the roof collapsed. The correct information is Safi was not involved in the ownership of the Mill Street complex, nor did he sue the tenants.
