Orders For Durable Goods Fall

New orders for manufactured durable goods fell for the second straight month, dragged down by a 4.8 percent drop in orders for transportation equipment, the U.S. Commerce Department said today.

Overall, orders decreased $1.4 billion in October, or 0.7 percent, to $197.7 billion. That came on the heels of a 1.5 percent decrease in September. Excluding transportation equipment, however, new orders rose 0.7 percent in October.

Orders in the defense sector decreased drastically in October, by $1.7 billion, or 19.8 percent, to $6.7 billion. This was also a drag on overall orders since new orders excluding defense rose 0.2 percent.
