Forecast: 15% Growth In Online Holiday Spending

Online retail spending for the U.S. in November and December will reach $37.6 billion, representing a 15-percent gain over last year, according to comScore Inc., which measures online commerce and marketing.

"Due to the strength leading up to and during the holiday season-to-date, comScore's statistical models are forecasting that U.S. retail e-commerce spending will grow at a rate of 15 percent versus last year," said Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore, which is based in Reston, Va. "These projected growth rates reflect the significant channel shift we're witnessing from offline retail as an increasing number of consumers rely on the online channel for initial browsing, price comparisons and completing transactions."

Online shoppers spent $9.7 billion from Nov. 1-20, marking a 14-percent increase from last year, comScore said. Wednesday, Nov. 16 has been the heaviest online spending day of the season to date at $688 million, comScore said.
