Nunnelly named Dept. of Revenue commissioner

The Baker administration on Thursday introduced a former managing director of Bain Capital as the state's next revenue commissioner.

Mark Nunnelly next week will take over the post from Amy Pitter, who has remained on as commissioner after taking the post when Gov. Deval Patrick was in office.

Nunnelly was also named as special advisor to Baker for technology and innovation competitiveness.

"I am excited to have Mark join my administration in these important roles,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in a statement. “His track record of building organizations and growing companies in Massachusetts and across the country will add greatly to our policy discussions and initiative."

“The Department of Revenue plays a key role in our state’s financial and economic management and supports our ability to advance our key priorities across the commonwealth,” said Kristen Lepore, secretary of administration and finance. “I look forward to working with Mark to ensure fairness across the board.”

“I am pleased and excited to join the Baker-Polito Administration and to have the opportunity to put my skills and experience to work for the commonwealth,” Nunnelly said. “I want to ensure that we administer tax laws fairly, across the board, which will provide us with a healthy revenue stream while increasing the economic competitiveness that makes Massachusetts great.”

Mark Nunnelly joined Bain Capital, one of the world’s foremost private investment firms, in 1989 as a managing director. He has held a number of leadership roles as part of the firm’s growth and global expansion and worked extensively in the business services and technology industries. Prior to joining Bain Capital, Mr. Nunnelly was a partner at the consulting firm Bain & Company, working in the U.S., Asian and European strategy practices. Previously, he worked at Procter & Gamble in product management. Nunnelly also founded and had operating responsibility for several entrepreneurial ventures.

He has been deeply involved and a supporter of a number of Massachusetts and national philanthropic efforts, with a particular focus on children and national service. Mr. Nunnelly became a special limited partner of Bain Capital in 2014 and currently serves on several boards of directors.
