Sales of new homes in the Northeast rose 37 percent in May to 41,000, compared to 30,000 in April, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The number also is significantly higher than the 30,000 sales in May 2011.
Nationally, sales of new, single-family houses were at 369,000, 7.6 percent above April's revised rate of 343,000 and 19.8 percent higher than May 2011's estimate of 308,000.
The median sales price of new houses sold in the U.S. was $234,500, while the average was $273,900. The seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of May was 145,000, representing a supply of almost five months at the current sales rate.
