Matt McGovern, the owner of Newton-based McGovern Auto Group, plans to convert a 15-acre property into a collision center at 420 Boston Turnpike in Shrewsbury.
The property includes 214,000-square-foot and 13,800-square-foot industrial buildings, according to a listing from real estate service LoopNet. McGovern received approval from the Shrewsbury select board on Feb. 8 to demolish the smaller building and half of the larger one, with plans to refurbish the remaining structure.
The project is expected to create between 50 and 60 jobs. It will require approval from the zoning board, conservation commission, and planning board to proceed after demolition.
McGovern bought the Boston Turnpike property in September for $9.8 million, according to the Worcester South District Registry of Deeds. The property is assessed by the Town of Shrewsbury at just under $8 million.
McGovern Audi and BMW dealerships are in Shrewsbury.
The car dealer also bought a six-acre parcel containing The Green Thumb garden center in Westborough, located seven miles down Route 9 from the Shrewsbury development site.
