The International, a 36-hole private golf course in Bolton, is preparing to open a completely redesigned version of one of its two courses for limited play by members this fall.

The redesign came after Escalante, a Texas-based private company which owns a number of courses across the country, purchased The International in February 2021 after the previous owners filed for bankruptcy.

The completion of the redesign project begun in 2022, The Pines course has been redesigned to be more walkable for players of all skill levels, according to a Tuesday press release from The International. The renovation led to changes to all 18 green sites and hole corridors and the addition of fescue grass, a breed of wispy grass commonly found on links-style courses in Ireland and Scotland.

The redesign was led by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, founders of Texas-based golf course architecture firm Coore and Crenshaw.

Originally opened in 1955, The original incarnation of The Pines was a long course with challenging bunkers. A later redesign stretched The Pines to a lengthy 8,325 yards, significantly longer than the 7,555 yard-long Augusta National Golf Club, the site of the Masters Tournament.

The previous version of The Pines was the most difficult course in Central Massachusetts when measured by slope rating, according to data compiled by the WBJ Research Department.

In September 2022, The International’s other course, The Oaks, hosted the LIV Golf Invitational Boston, an event put on by the upstart golf tour founded by Australian retired golfer Greg Norman and funded by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia.
