New home sales up slightly, but below expectations

Sales of new homes across the United States in December rose 4.5 percent over December 2012, but fell well below analysts’ expectations, according to preliminary data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The HUD report said a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 414,000 new single-family homes were sold last month. That number was well below the 445,000 reported in November. Analysts polled by Yahoo had expected only a slight drop, to, 440,000.

The report said about 18,000 more homes were sold nationwide compared with the previous December. They were up in all regions of the U.S. except the Northeast, which saw sales drop from about 29,000 to approximately 21,000.
