$2.5M boosts vet school fund-raising campaign

A $2.5-million donation from a Connecticut couple has brought the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine halfway to its fund-raising goal to renovate and expand one of its teaching hospitals in Grafton.

The money for the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals was donated by Travis and Anne Engen, who are hospital clients and long-time supporters of the school. The Engens were motivated to contribute to the renovation because of personal experiences with their Tufts veterinarians, according to a statement from the school.

The renovation campaign, which was launched last spring, received a boost from a challenge gift given by the Amelia Peabody Charitable Fund in December. The Cummings School, part of Tufts University, must raise $5 million by the end of 2014 to receive a $2.5-million donation from the Peabody fund, an independent private foundation dedicated to continuing its namesake’s philanthropy.

“The Engen family and trustees of the Amelia Peabody Charitable Fund understand what the hospital renovation will mean for us and truly value the school’s mission of clinical service, teaching and research,” said Deborah T. Kochevar, dean of the Cummings School. “With their support, the Cummings School is now much closer to obtaining the funding needed to start Phase I construction and we hope to be able to do that soon with continued support from the community.”

Phase I of the renovation project is projected to cost $8 million and will increase the number of state-of-the-art examination rooms; and create larger treatment rooms for specialty services in ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology and dermatology which will reduce client wait times for such specialized care, according to the school.
