New England's unemployment rate remained unchanged month-over-month in April at 7.9 percent and remains below the national average of 9 percent, according to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Massachusetts had a 7.8-percent unemployment rate last month.
The commonwealth joined New Hampshire, Maine and 21 other states with an unemployment rate below the national average. New Hampshire recorded the third-lowest unemployment rate in the country.
Rhode Island was one of seven states with a higher unemployment rate than the national average. Its rate was 10.9 percent.
New England was one of the six regions across the entire country to have an unemployment rate below the national average. The U.S. West North Central region recorded the lowest regional rate at 6.8 percent while the Pacific region recorded the highest rate at 11.1 percent.
