N.E. Leads U.S. In Worker Pay, Benefits

Businesses in New England paid their workers more in compensation and benefits in September than the rest of the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workers in New England earned an hourly wage of $23.56 on average, plus $10.16 in benefits. That total compensation of $33.72 was more than 16 percent above the national average of $28.95. The amount paid in benefits trailed only the Middle Atlantic states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, where the average was 11 cents higher, at $10.27, according to data released by the bureau today.

The South region, which includes all other states east of the Mississippi River and south of the Ohio River, was the least expensive, with average hourly wages and benefits amounting to $26.32. The Midwest average was $28.15 and the West, $30.14.
