As the Worcester property is being actively marketed for development, the Mount Carmel Preservation Society said it now has a viable -- but undisclosed -- option to preserve the building.
During the Worcester Historical Society meeting on Thursday, society member Amoret Zamarro Beiter, citing new and exciting circumstances, asked the commission to deny the society's request to consider designating the area an historic district.
The historical commission followed through by voting unanimously to deny the request, similar to the vote the commission took last January.
The Mount Carmel Church, closed since May 2016, sits on about five acres of land and is being marketed by the Diocese of Worcester. The site, off of I-290 near Shrewsbury Street, has drawn interest from developers, according to Worcester real estate firm Kelleher & Sadowsky.
The preservation society is appealing to the Vatican to block a sale of the church and preserve it for use as a church, society member Carmelita Bello said Friday.
Bello declined to comment on what the society is planning to do to save the church, but said the group’s appeal is viable.
