U.S. Rep. James McGovern, D-Worcester, filed a constitutional amendment today seeking to overturn a 2010 Supreme Court decision that removed corporate spending limits on political campaigns, according to the group that authored the bill.
The legislation that seeks to establish an amendment, which, if approved, would be the 28th, was written by Free Speech for People, a group that describes itself as national and nonpartisan and that has advocated against the court ruling. Critics say the ruling has allowed corporations and unions to influence political campaigns with large sums of money, often anonymously.
The bill introduced by McGovern starts with: "We the people who ordain and establish this Constitution intend the rights protected by this Constitution to be the rights of natural persons."
The bill goes on to state that people, persons or citizens do not include corporations, limited liability companies or other corporate entities.
