The Center for Advanced Manufacturing at MassTech in Westborough, in collaboration with the state’s Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development, announced on Thursday the launch of a new $2-million manufacturing grant program aimed at supporting small and midsized manufacturers across the state.
The grant program will be particularly concerned with helping manufacturers prepare their businesses to meet the demands of smart-technology-driven production methods.
To be known as the Massachusetts Manufacturing Accelerate Program, or MMAP, the program will help fund projects developing partnerships between private sector firms and other organizations in what the announcement described as the manufacturing ecosystem, including nonprofits, research & development centers, academic institutions, and quasi-public agencies.
“Our past grant programs have helped many homegrown manufacturers build on their successful product lines and harness co-investment from the federal government,” said Christine Nolan, director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing. “The MMAP is focused on supercharging small manufacturers, companies that want to develop and grow a technical partnership within the state, but need capital investment to scale and get that project off the ground.”
Applications for the cost-sharing grants will be evaluated based on a number of criteria, including new jobs created, new markets and customers enabled by new capabilities, collaboration with ecosystem partners, cost-sharing logistics, alignment with key industries, impact on supply chain, workforce training plans and whether the project contributes to geographic, social, racial and economically equitable outcomes, per MassTech.
Priority will be given to projects addressing key manufacturing growth areas and alignment with emerging federal opportunities.
