MassMEP Wins $4M Training Grant
The Worcester-based Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership has received a $4 million federal grant that will help train and prepare nearly 1,000 Bay State residents for manufacturing jobs and careers.
The grant, announced Friday at the partnership’s headquarters, will fund MassMEP’s More Skilled Workers program, which is designed to give jobs to U.S. workers ahead of foreigners working in the United States on temporary H-1B visas.
The program will focus on 960 participants who will partake in such services as career seminars and resume assistance. In addition, 216 degreed and accredited workers will be given training, placement, and mentoring for specific jobs and careers in advanced manufacturing. The program is based on the success of a job training and placement program facilitated by MassMEP. The organization said the program has placed more than 1,000 workers in manufacturing jobs over the past several years.
The training program is custom designed for each employer and involves multiple phases, including training for employees who will operate specific equipment.
The grant has been funded through fees paid by employers to bring foreign workers into the U.S. under the H-1B program. The grants are intended to raise the technical skill levels of American workers and, over time, help businesses reduce their need to use the H-1B program.
