MassBio, a Cambridge nonprofit trade association representing the Massachusetts life science industry, will begin a nationwide search for a new CEO following its current president and CEO’s departure in early 2021.

Outgoing president and CEO Robert Coughlin announced his impending departure in an email to members early Monday morning.

“After more than 13 years leading this wonderful organization, today I am announcing that I will be stepping down as president & CEO of MassBio in early 2021,” Coughlin wrote.

The organization’s current chief operating officer, Kendalle Burlin O’Connell, will be promoted to president and COO, and vice president of public affairs Zach Stanley will be promoted to executive vice president. They will be part of the team leading a nationwide search for a new CEO.

In his announcement, Coughlin reflected on the way the state’s life science sector has grown over the last two decades, including, according to Coughlin, 94% employment growth over 15 years, and over 16.5 million square feet of lab space built in the last 10 years.

“Perhaps most importantly, investment in early-stage R&D via our research institutions and startup and emerging stage biopharmas has exploded with [National Institutes of Health] and [venture capital] funding for our industry among the highest in our country,” Coughlin wrote. “External partnering and IPOs from Massachusetts companies remain the rocket fuel that keeps our cluster on top and powers breakthrough cures and therapies.”

The organization boasts more than 1,400 members, representing 1,000 new additions since Coughlin assumed leadership.
