More residents left Massachusetts than moved into it in 2023, putting the commonwealth in seventh on a list of most moved-from states for the third consecutive year.
In the state, 56.6% of moves were outbound in 2023, according to data released on Tuesday by United Van Lines, a Missouri-based moving company. Among the reasons for leaving, 19.2% of people who left Massachusetts listed moving closer to family and 18% listed retirement as their reasons for leaving. Of those leaving, 50.1% were over the age of 55.
Of those moving into Massachusetts, 34.9% said their career was their reason for moving.
Of those leaving Massachusetts, 75.3% have annual incomes more than $100,000, but 77.1% of inbound residents also fell in this income range.
Vermont was the most moved-into state in 2023, while New Jersey saw the largest exodus of residents, according to United Van Lines.
“We are continuing to see the trend that Americans are moving to more affordable, lower-density areas across the country,” Eily Cumming, United Van Lines vice president of corporate communications, said in a Tuesday press release. “Movers are also becoming more strategic with their planning, as relocation continues to be driven by factors such as the price of housing, regional climates, urban planning, and job growth.”
Founded in 1928, United Van Lines has annually tracked migration patterns on a state-by-state basis since 1977.
