Massachusetts continued to be one of the most moved-out-of-states in 2022, according to an annual report by Missouri-based mover United Van Lines.

The state fared better than in 2021, with 56.6% percent of moves in the state being outbound in 2022, compared with 57.6% outbound in 2021, the highest since 2013.

The leading reasons for people leaving the state are family, jobs, and retirement. More than 56% of people moving out of the state are aged 55 and over, according to the report from United Van Lines, which says it is the nation’s largest household goods mover.

Of people leaving the state, 68% have incomes of over $100,000.

“Key factors like retirement, wanting to be closer to family and lifestyle changes influenced by the pandemic along with current housing prices drove moving patterns in 2022,” Michael Stoll, economist and professor of public policy and urban planning at UCLA, said in a Monday press release from United Van Lines.

Vermont saw the highest percentage of inbound moves at 77%. It was followed by Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Delaware.

“We’re also seeing younger Millennials migrating to vibrant, metropolitan economies, like Washington, D.C. and Portland, Oregon,” continued Stoll.

States with a higher percentage of outbound migration than Massachusetts were Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Michigan, New York, Illinois and New Jersey, which topped the list for the second consecutive year.
