The latest list of unclaimed properties in Massachusetts has been released, with billions of dollars worth of properties owed to individuals and businesses throughout the state.
The list from Massachusetts State Treasurer Deb Goldberg includes over $2 billion in unclaimed properties.
Unclaimed property includes forgotten savings and checking accounts, un-cashed checks, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, dividends and the contents of unattended safe deposit boxes. According to a release from the treasurer’s office, most accounts are considered abandoned and are turned over to the state after three years of inactivity.
Last year, more than $114 million in property was returned to its rightful owners.
