The average price of regular gasoline in Massachusetts continues to fall, dropping to $3.49 per gallon, down eight cents from last week, according to travel association AAA Northeast.

Prices are 46 cents lower than one month ago, but still 39 cents higher than this time last year.

“The regional differences in gas prices are stark at the moment, with prices here in the East still falling, prices on the West Coast hitting $6 a gallon and higher, while Texas and Gulf Coast states have prices dipping below $3 in some areas,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast vice president of public and government affairs, said in a Monday press release.

With prices rising dramatically in the West Coast, Massachusetts prices have fallen even further below the national average, which now sits at $3.79 a gallon, up seven cents from last week.

The California price spikes have been driven by maintenance at six refineries and a limited pipeline supply, Maguire said.

Gas prices could spike worldwide, Maguire said, if the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, which include Russia as part of the OPEC+ pact, decide to cut production in their Vienna meeting on Wednesday.
