Mass Biologics To Cut 49 Jobs

The Worcester-based Massachusetts Biologics Center, a division of the UMass Medical School that manufactures vaccines, is cutting 49 workers in its Mattapan facility.

The nonprofit, FDA-licensed organization employs about 250 at three facilities in Worcester, Mattapan and Boston, and that number will be reduced by about one-fifth.

MBL expects a decrease in demand for its tetanus and diphtheria vaccine that’s sold throughout the United States because of recent changes to federal immunization guidelines.

MBL was formed in 1894 and switched from being a part of the state’s Department of Public Health to the UMass Medical School in 1997. MBL opened the manufacturing facility in the Mattapan section of Boston in 2005 and opened a research and development lab in 2010 in the city.

The organization is self-funded through its manufacturing and distribution operations.
