Massachusetts added 10,900 jobs in December and the unemployment rate dropped to 5.5 percent in December, the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development (EOLWD) said Thursday.
The figures are based on preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
They show that the December unemployment rate was down 0.3 of a percentage point over November.
BLS also revised its November job estimate to an 11,700 job gain from the 13,500 gain previously reported for the month.
The December 2014 estimates show 3,371,500 Massachusetts residents were employed and 194,900 were unemployed, for a total labor force of 3,566,400, the EOLWD said. The labor force was an estimated 83,300 above the 3,483,100 December 2013 estimate, with 134,700 more residents employed and 51,400 fewer residents unemployed.
Jobs added in December break down as follows: leisure and hospitality, 4,700; professional, scientific and business services, 2,700; education and health services, 2,200; other services, 600; construction, 300; and trade, transportation and utilities, 200 jobs.
In the financial activities category, 800 jobs were lost in December, while the manufacturing and information sectors lost 700 each.
Government added 2,300 jobs in December, the EOLWD reported.
