Montachusett Regional Transit Authority (MART) has acquired an 18.6-acre site in Westminster Business Park to construct a new commuter rail layover station, according to park owners.
According to the Northern Worcester County Registry of Deeds, the property was purchased for just over $1 million on June 29.
The new facility will support the planned extension of the Fitchburg commuter rail line, according WBP LLC. It said MART's project will reinstate passenger service in downtown Fitchburg with the new Wachusett station within close proximity to the Route 2 and Route 31 interchange.
Officials hope the ease of access to Route 2 from the 250-acre park will encourage motorists to switch to transit, decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project involves construction of a new passenger station and facilities, and requires the relocation of train staging functions, as well as upgrades to one of the two existing mainline tracks from the present terminals of the Fitchburg Line to the MBTA layover facility approximately 1.2 miles west of the proposed station.
MART will construct six new tracks for train storage and deployment.
