The majority of small businesses nationally are not concerned about medical marijuana when it comes to their employees, and 1 in 5 would allow medical use on site, according to a survey by Employers Holdings insurance.
The vast majority of employers (81 percent) said they were unconcerned that their employees would come to work under the influence of marijuana now that it is legal in more states, according to the survey.
The survey of 501 small businesses across the U.S. with fewer than 100 employees found mixed feelings when it comes to medical marijuana. While roughly 19 percent of those responding would allow its use at work if the employee had a prescription for medical marijuana, 62 percent would not while 17 percent were unsure.
Regardless of position on the topic, the most important step employers can take is to have a “clearly documented workplace safety policy that specifically addresses drug use in the workplace,” Dr. Dwight Robertson, medical director for Employers said in a statement.
Additionally, the survey found 42 percent of small businesses do not have a written policy prohibiting employees from possessing, using or being under the influence of marijuana at work, while 74 percent of small businesses do not require employees to take drug tests.
