Aaron Industries of Leominster has received FDA approval for the use of a new, fully-recycled polystyrene resin in food-safe products, the company announced this week.
The approval marks the company’s first entry into the food-safe plastics industry. The compound has a wide array of applications, including plastic cutlery, food storage containers and single-use storage containers. The letter of no objection from the FDA means the company can market and use the plastic in food-safe applications, said Peter Angelini of Aaron Industries. A third-party lab found that the plastic meets the criteria to be food safe, (attribute here).
Aaron Industries has been creating recycled plastics for years, and last year recycled more than 50 million pounds of plastics, according to Angelini.
The new plastic resin will be distributed to injection molding companies. The company employs approximately 50 people in over 200,000 square feet of manufacturing and design space in Leominster.
