Large Firms Fuel Job Growth

Firms with 250 or more employees accounted for 73 percent of total net job gains during the fourth quarter of 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found.

During that time, there were 7 million jobs created by opening or expanding establishments. Meanwhile, there were 6.4 million job losses from closing or contracting establishments.

There were also more new businesses started in the fourth quarter, with the number of new establishments increasing from 14,000 in the third quarter to 196,000 in the fourth quarter. Those new establishments accounted for 771,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, there were 667,000 jobs lost from 196,000 establishments closing.
