Career highlights:
I’m a researcher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mental Health Services Research. I started at UMMS while a graduate student at Brandeis University. I work closely with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, conducting and disseminating nationally-recognized research to serve the citizens of the commonwealth with severe mental illness. I also work with Employment Options Inc., a community mental health provider in Marlborough, developing and implementing Family Options, an innovative program to support families living with parental mental illness.

Community involvement:
For the past six years I’ve been on the board of directors of Respond Inc., one of the oldest domestic violence programs in the country, with a mission of helping women and children create options for a safer life, free from domestic violence. Volunteering provides me an opportunity to learn new skills, serve my community, and to do it all with a great group of dedicated staff and volunteers.

Biggest success:
Shortly after finishing graduate school, I wrote a grant with Employment Options for a year of funding to build collaborative networks with other community providers. Employment Options was awarded the money, and that work laid the foundation for the development of Family Options. While this grant was not the largest in terms of dollars, it really set the stage for future work to support families.

Dream job:
My dream job is interesting and challenging work with fun and smart colleagues.

Businessperson she most admires and why:
My UMMS colleague, Dr. Joanne Nicholson. She taught me the importance of the business side of research, i.e., securing funding, managing budgets, bringing all the relevant players to the table to get the job done, and thinking strategically about next steps. Whatever I’ve learned about these skills has come from Dr. Nicholson, who manages to do all of the above with extreme competence and a great sense of humor.
