Smartphones will make up nearly 80 percent of the “smart” connected device market by 2019, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC) of Framingham.
The forecast, part of IDC’s Quarterly Smart Connected Device Tracker, predicts that the distribution of smart connected devices (SCD) will be 77.8 percent smartphones, 11.6 percent PCs, and 10.7 percent tablets by 2019. That would be a large shift from the 2010 market, when desktops and notebooks combined to account for 52.5 percent of sales. Smartphones were right behind at 44.7 percent and tablets, 2.8 percent of the market, according to IDC. By 2014, smartphones had grown to represent 73.4 percent of total shipments, while PCs had slipped to 16.8 percent and tablets had increased to 12.5 percent.
“For more people in more places, the smartphone is the clear choice in terms of owning one connected device. Even as we expect slowing smartphone growth later in the forecast, it's hard to overlook the dominant position smartphones play in the greater device ecosystem,” Tom Mainelli of IDC said in a statement. “And it's not likely that anything—including wearables—will unseat it from this dominant position anytime soon."
The emerging markets for sub-$100 smartphones, will be increasingly important, IDC said. In 2014, 73 percent of smartphones were shipped to emerging markets and 21 percent of those shipped were priced below $100, according to IDC. By 2019, those numbers are expected to increase to 80 percent and 35 percent, respectively.
