Hopkinton architects create highest LEED-rated building in Massachusetts

The Subaru of New England headquarters is the highest LEED rated building of its size in New England and New York.
The firm of Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects announced that its recently completed project for Subaru of New England in Norwood has achieved the LEED Plaatinum rating with 86 points, making it the highest rated LEED building in Massachusetts and highest in its class in New England.
The project consists of a 75,000 square foot office building and a 90,000 square foot distribution facility to accommodate the Subaru of New England Corporate offices, as well as training facilities, dealer distribution offices and advertising centers. It is among the greenest privately-owned buildings in the country over 100,000 square feet, according to the firm.
The Norwood building was designed by the Hopkinton architecture group with efficiency and energy consciousness in mind. It includes a solar array; a super efficient HVAC system and insulation; LED lighting throughout; rain gardens and drought-tolerant landscaping; and many regionally-sourced and recycled materials. Additionally, the site itself involved reclaiming a brownfield and restoring wetlands. Solar panels on the roof supply the building with 228,000 kWh of power per year.
The group worked with Subaru of New England, Columbia Construction, and WSP-Parsons Brinckerhoff to complete the project in 15 months.
