College of the Holy Cross in Worcester has been designated a First-gen Forward institution by the Center for First-generation Student Success, the school announced on Friday.

The designation recognizes Holy Cross as a school demonstrating commitment to supporting first-generation college students. Some 16% of the school’s students are considered first-generation, which generally means they come from a household wherein neither parents completed a four-year college degree program.

First-generation college students often face increased challenges in matriculating and completing their degree programs, brought on by a variety of factors, often related to learning to navigate the higher education apparatus without parents who are able to guide them with their own experience.

With the designation, Holy Cross faculty and staff will have the chance to engage with peer institutions working to improve the experience of first-generation students, including to participate in a networking and development program, including monthly check-ins, professional development, goal setting, annual reporting and other programming.

“Joining First-gen Forward both honors the work we have been doing to support first-generation students at Holy Cross to achieve their greatest goals, and gives us access to additional tools and resources to improve our efforts,” said Michele Murray, vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Holy Cross, in a statement.
