Marlborough-based medical device manufacturer Hologic has rung in the new year having closed its acquisition of California-based medical technology manufacturer Gynesonics for $350 million.
"We are excited to complete the acquisition of Gynesonics and to increase access to their Sonata System, which complements and expands our range of minimally invasive solutions for heavy periods and fibroids," Brandon Schnittker, Hologic president of surgical solutions, said in a Monday press release. "As global champions for women’s health, we are dedicated to empowering surgeons with diverse, cutting-edge treatment options as we strive to transform women’s lives for the better."
Hologic originally announced its plans to acquire the privately held manufacturer in October as the firm looked to add Gynesonics’ Sonata System technology to its portfolio, a system used in diagnostic intrauterine imaging and transcervical treatment of certain symptomatic uterine fibroids.
"As we embark on this new phase with Hologic, we are excited to see the continued success of the Sonata System, which has already made a difference in the lives of thousands of women," Skip Baldino, president and CEO of Gynesonics, said in the release. "Hologic’s commitment to women’s health and their leadership in innovation make them a perfect fit for our organization."
Hologic’s latest acquisition comes after the manufacturer completed its approximately $310-million acquisition of U.K.-based breast cancer surgery technology developer Endomagnetics in July.
With 766 local employees as of the first quarter 2024, Hologic is the 11th largest manufacturer in Central Massachusetts when ranked by number of local employees, according to data provided to WBJ’s Research Department. Founded in 1985, the firm generated $4 billion in revenue in 2023 with 6,944 employees worldwide.
