Medical device manufacturer Hologic is broadening its focus on women’s health as the Marlborough-based firm has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the California-based medical technology manufacturer Gynesonics.

The $350-million acquisition includes Gynesonics’ Sonata System technology used in diagnostic intrauterine imaging and transcervical treatment of certain symptomatic uterine fibroids, according to a Monday press release from Hologic.

“Gynesonics’ Sonata System complements our offering and will give GYN surgeons across the globe an expanded range of options to treat women suffering from heavy periods and fibroids,” Brandon Schnittker, Hologic surgical solutions division president, said in the release. “This acquisition furthers our commitment to providing women with minimally invasive treatment options. We are enthusiastic about the future as we work to expand access to and drive innovation for treatments that enhance women’s quality of life.”

The Sonatana System can be used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding caused by fibroids and is an alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy procedures, according to Gynesonics’ website.

The purchase transaction is subject to working capital and customary closing conditions including the receipt of required regulatory approvals.

Hologic's latest acquisition follows its April announcement that the company would purchase breast cancer surgery technology developer Endomagnetics of the United Kingdom for approximately $310 million. The transaction was completed in July.
