Health Connector joins with SBA to spread health care information

The Massachusetts Health Connector agreed to an alliance with a federal agency to help spread information to companies about its insurance program for businesses with 50 or fewer employees.

Under the agreement, the U.S. Small Business Administration will make information about the Health Connector's Health Connector for Business program available at its business centers and through its partner organizations and will designate a local point of contact between the SBA and the Health Connector.

"This alliance will bring resources on affordable health coverage to more small businesses across Massachusetts," Health Connector Executive Director Louis Gutierrez said. "Through this partnership, more companies in Massachusetts can learn how to give their employees the opportunity to pick their own plan, while saving their company money."

Companies with 50 or fewer employees that enroll in the Health Connector for Business program can set their own premium costs and allow employees to select a plan that best meets their needs, which the Connector said is "a flexibility offered to small businesses nowhere else."

The program was launched about a year ago and the Connector said that companies that shopped for insurance through the program saved 22 percent on premiums compared those that shopped elsewhere. The program also offers ways for businesses to earn additional rebates up to 15 percent, with an average rebate of $3,200 in 2018, according to the Connector.

Through the partnership, the Health Connector, which was formed due to the 2006 universal health care law, will also provide information on SBA services and programs. "We know that when small businesses have access to health coverage they can grow and thrive for the long term," SBA Massachusetts Deputy District Director David Polatin said.
