In an interview on the WBJ Podcast this week, John Roche, president and CEO of the Hanover Insurance Group in Worcester, said the publicly traded company is well positioned to weather the coming economic recession, as it has diversified and strengthened its revenue streams over the years.
"We will weather the storm as well as anybody in our industry," Roche said on the Weekly Business Report episode, "John C. Roche of the Power 50 operates globally and gives back locally".
Among other people, Roche credited the vision and strategy former Hanover CEO Fred Eppinger laid down during his 13 years leading the company. Eppinger retired in 2016, and Roche took over for his replacement at the end of 2017.
"One of the things I learned from Fred is having really good results that aren't aligned with the strategy you are deploying are almost irrelevant," Roche said. "Anybody can have a good run, but if you are building toward a special company or if you are trying to build on the success of the Central Massachusetts area, you have to have a strategy and you have to build toward those metrics."
On the podcast, Roche discussed the importance of Hanover and its employees being involved in community and volunteer efforts, as well as detailing the ways the company is well positioned to weather the coming recession.
