The Worcester-based Guild of St. Agnes, which has locations throughout Worcester County, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, starting with an event this weekend at the DCU Center.
Founded in 1913 by groups affiliated with the Catholic Church to house women and children who were poor, detained by the courts or had lost their jobs , the Guild today has grown to 14 locations and 100 child-care homes in Central Massachusetts. The organization, which cares for 1,300 children in six centers, 100 family homes and 10 after-school programs, employs 260 full and part-time workers and is no longer affiliated with the church.
The Guild housed hundreds children during an influenza pandemic in 1918 and during both world wars, when mothers needed child-care services so they could work in factories and other facilities that supported the military.
According to Sharon Woodbury, head of human resources and public relations for the Guild, children and families will take in a Worcester Sharks game on Saturday. In April, the organization is holding a pre-show party at the Hanover Theatre before a performance of Les Miserables. Finally, in October, the Guild will hold an event at Wachusett Country Club.
