Feedback Earth, a Grafton-based company converting food waste into animal feed, has been fined again by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for state permit violations, this time for $6,000.
The company was fined as a result of multiple off-site odor events and improper food waste management practices, according to a statement released by MassDEP on Thursday. The department stated in the release the company has a permit from MassDEP to convert food waste into animal feed, but that permit requires the company to comply with the state’s air regulations and food waste management rules.
The company was previously fined $9,520 in June 2022 for violations of the air pollution and solid waste regulations.
“Feedback Earth’s continued noncompliance issues have created public nuisances and the potential for public health problems,” Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said in the statement. “MassDEP is closely monitoring their operations to ensure that they are not further causing or contributing to air pollution and possible health hazards.”
When reached by phone by WBJ on Friday, Feedback Earth Chief Operating Officer David Jenicek was apologetic about the violations.
“The fine was fair. We acquired the property out of chapter 11 bankruptcy and pledged to fix it,” he said. “We are in the process of restoring the property to truly become part of the community, and we realize that odors are not acceptable.”
