Grafton food waste conversion facility fined for odor

Food waste conversion company, Feedback Earth Inc. of Grafton, will pay a $9,520 fine levied by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection for violations of the air pollution and solid waste regulations.

In addition to the monetary penalty, the company will establish a 24-hour odor reporting hotline and will retain a third-party odor consultant.

“Companies that engage in activities with the potential to create odors must be diligent in complying with environmental permits” said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester in a Wednesday press release.

Odors produced by the company’s 109 Creeper Hill Road were reported by the news outlet Grafton Common, among many others in late 2021. At the time, the company attributed the smell to tofu processing.

Feedback Earth Inc. firm aims to reduce food waste by processing discarded food into animal feed. The company claims to have the capacity to process 15% of Massachusetts food waste to fill 10% of New England’s animal feed demand.
