Genzyme Reaches Deal With Icahn

Cambridge-based drug manufacturer Genzyme Corp., which employs about 2,000 people in Framingham, has reached a proxy agreement with activist investor Carl Icahn, the company announced Wednesday.

As part of the agreement, two new members of the company’s Board of Directors will be backed by Icahn. They include Steven Burkaoff and Eric Ende, both medical doctors.

Icahn has been looking to place himself and up to four total people on the board.

The company has come under criticism recently from Icahn after a federal inspector found traces of a virus in the company’s Allston manufacturing plant last year, which caused its temporary closure.
