The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline jumped nationwide over the past week, although prices in the Greater Worcester metro area and across Massachusetts remain below the national average.

Worcester metro gas prices jumped more than 8 cents since Jan. 16 to $3.339 on Monday, according to Monday data from the travel association AAA.

Statewide, prices jumped 7 cents to $3.37 per gallon, though that is 2 cents cheaper than one month prior.

Nationwide, the average shot up 12 cents to $3.42 per gallon over the past week.

“Gas prices are up as crude oil prices have risen to levels not seen since mid-November thanks to expectations that cooling inflation will spike demand in the United States and China’s economy bounces back from COVID-related shutdowns,” Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast vice president of public and government affairs, in a Monday press release. “Even though national crude inventories have rebounded and are now substantially above average, some of the surplus is due to a drop in refinery output in recent weeks.”
