On Monday, Massachusetts State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg appointed Sarah Kim as the interim chairman of the state Cannabis Control Commission, one week after former CCC Chairman Steven Hoffman abruptly resigned from the state body.
"I am grateful to the treasurer for entrusting me with this opportunity to be the interim chair of the Cannabis Control Commission until a new chair is appointed, and I look forward to working with agency staff, stakeholders, and commissioners to continue the important work of growing a successful, safe, and equitable industry in Massachusetts,” said Kim in a press release from the treasurer’s office.
Kim, who has previously overseen the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission while serving as deputy treasurer under State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg, takes over from Hoffman, who resigned from his position in April and stated his desire to help lead a new industry in Massachusetts, according to the release. The abrupt resignation of Hoffman came without an official release and was first reported in the Boston Globe, citing emails sent to the Cannabis Advisory Board.
Kim formerly served as an assistant attorney general in the Fraud and Financial Crimes Division under former Attorney General Martha Coakley. She is a graduate of the Villanova University School of Law in Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.
“I am excited to welcome Sarah Kim to the Cannabis Control Commission,” said Shawn Collins, executive director of the commission, as part of the treasury’s announcement. “Having previously worked alongside Sarah, I know she will instantly hit the ground running and add tremendous talent to our dynamic team. I’m grateful to Treasurer Goldberg for appointing such a skilled public servant.”
The first public meeting of CCC that Kim is set to preside over will occur on Thursday. The treasury will continue to seek applications to find a permanent chairman for the commission.
