Massachusetts’ average gas price hit a new record high after rising 18 cents in a week to $4.39 per gallon of regular unleaded, according to a Monday press release from travel association AAA Northeast.

Monday’s average price is 18 cents higher than it was last week, 27 cents higher than a month ago, and $1.54 higher than the same day in 2021.

Gas in Massachusetts is 7 cents more expensive than the national average price. Nationally, the average price of gasoline is currently a penny less than the record high, which was set on March 11.

Prices are continuing to increase due to crude oil costs spiking from around $100 per barrel last week to nearly $110.

“With the cost of oil accounting for more than half of the pump price, more expensive oil means more expensive gasoline,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs, in a statement. “Locally, prices have now moved past those record high levels of early March.”
