Headwall Photonics, a Bolton-based company specializing in hyperspectral imaging instruments, has named Mark Willingham as the company’s CEO.

A former U.S Navy officer and a Gulf War veteran, Willingham most recently served as the vice president and general manager of Dover Motion, a motion systems company based in  Boxborough. Before that, He held a senior leadership position at New Hampshire-based Labsphere, according to a press release issued by Headwall on Thursday.

"I am honored to join Headwall, a company known for its cutting-edge technology and commitment to excellence," Willingham said in the release. "I look forward to working with the talented team at Headwall and our subsidiaries, Holographix LLC and perClass BV, to continue delivering elegant solutions to customers and driving growth in our industries."

Willingham takes over the role from Headwall founder David Bannon, who was the company’s CEO and president from 2003 until February 2022, according to his LinkedIn page. Bannon has stayed on with the company as a member of its board of directors.

Headwall was founded in Fitchburg and opened a second location in Bolton in 2017. The Bolton location now serves as the company’s headquarters, according to its website.

The company specializes in spectral imaging instruments and software hyperspectral imaging, which is technology analyzing a wide spectrum of lights invisible to the human eye. The company’s technology is used in a variety of industries, including food inspection, mining, and environmental monitoring.

Headwall was acquired by Arsenal, a mid-market private equity firm based in New York City, in January 2022.

Under Willingham’s leadership, Headwall is looking to expand its market presence and product offerings, according to the release.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mark Willingham to the Headwall team," Marc Tremblay, operating partner at Arsenal Capital Partners, said in the statement. "Mark’s extensive experience in the photonics and automation industries, combined with his proven leadership skills, make him the ideal person to lead Headwall into its next phase of innovation and growth."
