Fitchburg State Offers Free Courses For Parents

Beginning in the fall, Fitchburg State University will offer one free college course to parents of children who are first-generation college students at the school.

Fitchburg State said its Family First program builds upon its efforts to make college more accessible and acknowledges the school's history of educating first-generation college students. The school said more than one-third of its students are the first of their immediate family to pursue college degrees. Mailings about the program are being sent to more than 300 eligible households.

"Accessibility is one of Fitchburg State University's core values," said President Robert V. Antonucci. "The Family First program will allow us to bring a college education within reach to even more people, providing a cost-free opportunity to explore the university experience."

One free course, valued at more than $1,000, will be offered to all parents of self-identified first-generation freshmen and the offer will expire after one year. Students will be responsible for the cost of books, but the school has an emergency fund available and the campus bookstore has books available for rent.

Day and evening courses that don't require prerequisites and that have available classroom space during registration will be offered. Students can take the course for credit unless they choose not to.

Available courses include basic math and writing; introductory classes on U.S. government; global issues; world civilizations; health and fitness; exercise, nutrition and heart disease; psychology, sociology, philosophy, art or music; and beginning foreign language.
