Fitchburg State, Framingham State receive $200K for student benefits

Fitchburg State University and Framingham State University have each received $100,000 grants, both schools announced Monday.

Fitchburg State received funding from the Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts to benefit engineering technology students, and Framingham State from the Cummings Foundation for a summer program for underrepresented and first-generation students from low-income households.

A longstanding relationship with the Wellesley-based contractors group has already given Fitchburg State students dozens of internships and jobs. Now, the school said, it includes a donation to support curriculum and additional laboratory support. The funds will help students with licensure requirements to meet the industry’s workforce needs for construction managers and engineering technologists.

Framingham State’s funding will create the Summer Bridge Program, set to launch next year, to help students with academics, financial literacy, mental wellness, and inclusive leadership. The school said it was one of 130 local nonprofits to receive grants through the Woburn-based Cummings Foundation’s $20-million grant program. Over 50% of the university’s incoming class for fall 2019 were the first in their family to attend college.
