The Fitchburg Art Museum has been recognized for its work with the community, being named one of 30 finalists for a national award focused on museums making a difference in their communities.

The museum is a finalist for the National Medal, the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries for service to the community, according to a release from the Fitchburg Art Museum. The finalists all provide valuable work providing citizens with educational resources and opportunities for lifelong learning, according to a statement from Kathryn Matthew, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Fitchburg Art Museum was founded in 1925 and its five-building complex, with over 20,000 square feet of exhibition space, features historical collections as well as contemporary New England art.

"For almost a century, the museum has helped strengthen the Third District by preserving and sharing the diverse traditions that make our corner of Massachusetts so unique, including their efforts to be accessible and engaging through multicultural programming and experiences," said Congresswoman Niki Tsongas who nominated the museum.

The National Medal winners will be named later this spring, and representatives from winning institutions will travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored at the National Medal award ceremony.
